One of the first things we did when we took over a fintech platform's infrastructure was look at the bill. R12,000 a month. For a platform serving a few thousand users. That's not a hosting cost — that's a leak.
Within three months, we got it down to R1,500. Same platform. Same users. Same uptime. Here's how.
Step 1: Audit What's Actually Running
The first thing we always do is answer a simple question: what's actually running, and does it need to be? In this case, the platform was running 12 virtual machines across multiple providers — many of them underutilised or redundant. Some VMs were running services that hadn't been touched in months. Others were duplicates of the same service across different environments that should have been consolidated.
We mapped every service to every VM. We identified which services were critical, which were optional, and which were dead weight.
Step 2: Consolidate and Right-Size
Most cloud overspending comes from one of two things: over-provisioning (paying for resources you don't use) or sprawl (too many small instances instead of fewer, properly-sized ones).
We consolidated 12 VMs into a 4-node cluster across four isolated layers: application, database, blockchain, and explorer. Each node was right-sized to its actual workload. The result? The same performance at a fraction of the cost.
Step 3: Automate Everything Manual
Manual deployments are expensive — not just in developer time, but in the risk they introduce. Every manual step is a potential point of failure. We implemented Docker-based deployment with automated scripts, eliminating hours of manual work per deployment cycle.
Step 4: Monitor What Matters
You can't optimise what you can't see. We set up monitoring dashboards that track resource utilisation, costs, and performance metrics in real-time. When something spikes, we know about it before it becomes a problem.
The Result
R12,000/month became R1,500/month. That's an 87% reduction — saving the client over R126,000 per year. And the platform actually runs better than before, because it's properly architected instead of duct-taped together.
Is Your Infrastructure Leaking Money?
If you're paying more than you think you should for hosting, you probably are. We offer infrastructure audits that identify exactly where you're overspending and what to do about it. Get in touch — it might be the most profitable conversation you have this quarter.
